Info About...Construction
Quarrying is an open-pit mine, where a variety of rock and minerals are extracted out of, the majority of rocks extracted from them are for the use of building materials; therefore they are rocks like sand and gravel. Quarries are often close by to concrete plants due to the high aggregate needed for the materials.
An example of a type of rock that is extracted from a quarry is limestone, which is a sedimentary rock. It contains a large amount of calcium carbonate and quarries that have limestone in their soil bedrock have probably been pre-fertilized with calcium. Limestone is used commonly used for architecture and masonry work, it's also an extremely important factor in the likes of concrete. Limestone was also famously used to build several building in Colwyn Bay, there are also two large quarries in Llysfaen which have through out their time produced millions of tons of limestone, with one of them still producing a large amount of expensive limestone which the sell and export to a number of both chemical and cement countries.
Some of the problems that accumulate with quarries is that the water levels can become high, therefore causing drainage problems. This therefore requires the water to be removed, however if there are extremely high levels of water then the quarry has to under go a more complex process of having it drained out. The more water in a quarry also mean's that it costs more to remove; therefore some quarries are worked on from under water by the use of dredging.
